Who Gets Into Kindergarten?

Emails were sent out today to children, who live in our school catchment, informing families about whether their child was selected for a spot in our 2021 - 2022 Kindergarten class.  As our school is in a neighbourhood where many new families are choosing to live, our Kindergarten program is over-subscribed (meaning, we have more applicants than we have spaces).  We are not able to accept any transfer applications or International students at this time.

So how do we select who gets a spot?

If Kindergarten appilcants have an older sibling who will be attending our school during the 2021 - 2022 school year, these students are guaranteed a spot.  Almost 50% of our Kindergarten intake for this year was filled by siblings.

For the remaining students, we randomly select names until all children are given a number.  This enables us to fill the remaining available spaces AND create our waitlist at the same time.

For all students who were not successful at securing a space, you are placed at the closest school to us where there is space.  In our case, this is Talmey Elementary (just north of us, past Cambie).  As students are accepted to District programs, or have moved, or perhaps have changed their minds, spaces open up at our school and we fill those spaces with students on our waitlist.  We maintain this waitlist throughout the 2021 - 2022 school year.  Before the waitlist is dissolved, we contact any families who remain with children on our list to see if they wish to remain on it into the following school year.

While we recognize that not being accepted is disappointing, the system we have in place is fair for all applicants.  One final thing, we ensure that our school is at capacity, at all grade levels, throughout the school year.  A call from us may come at any time.

Sincerely,

Mike Murray
