Behind the Mask: Exploring Identity Through Art

What actions did we take?

  • Students in Divisions 1–9 worked with artist Laura Kwok and our librarian on a mask inquiry project focused on identity
  • Students explored how artistic elements such as line, colour, and shape can represent different aspects of identity
  • Each student created a personal mask and artist statement reflecting important parts of who they are
  • Staff members also participated in the inquiry by creating their own masks, modelling reflection, creativity, and vulnerability alongside students
  • Student work was showcased during an Art Gallery Open House, intentionally inviting families into the school to experience and celebrate this meaningful learning together, supporting our strategic priority of strengthening Community and Partnerships

How did it support increasing engagement, deepening thinking, and developing comprehension?

  • The mask project provided students with meaningful opportunities to reflect on and express their identities through art and writing
  • Students deepened their thinking as they considered how symbols, colours, and design choices could communicate meaning and personal experiences
  • Writing artist statements supported students in organizing and explaining their thinking clearly
  • Viewing and discussing the work of peers encouraged perspective-taking, connection, and appreciation for diverse identities and experiences
  • Exploring identity helps students build stronger personal connections, which supports deeper comprehension and meaning-making across learning experiences
